Polk County took out a stubborn McMinn Central squad 51-41 in District 5AA tournament action Friday night. They advanced to the tournament finals and are guaranteed a home first round region tournament game Saturday.
Logan Brewer, district MVP, led all scorers with 26 points had 10 rebounds and two blocked shots. He hit from outside, inside, and the foul line. In the process, he scored his 1000th career point. Al Akins only scored seven points but he dished out 10 assists.
The Chargers stayed close the entire game never trailing by more than nine. They finally took the lead at 38-37 and again at 41-40 with less than half the fourth quarter remaining. Polk would finish the game on an 11-0 run that included only one basket.
The Wildcats shot 21 free throws in the game with 20 of them coming in the final period. Six straight came in the final minute. Brewer tied the game with a free throw at 41-41. Evan Ball got an assist pass to Andrea Ragona whose basket gave Polk the lead for good at 43-41. Ragona added two free throws with 1:17 remaining. Ball canned to foul shots with 59 seconds left and again with 40 seconds remaining. Akins ended the run with a pair of free throws with 22 seconds left.
After the game, Coach Rusty Brewer said, “The guys understood just what this win would do for us. Tonight, we put ourselves in the district championship Tuesday and host the first round of the region tournament on Saturday. Logan (Brewer) had a big night scoring his 1000th career point, and I am very proud of him for reaching that milestone.”
