The visiting Copper Basin Cougars put on one of their finest performances of the year, steam-rolling over host Hiwasee Dam 80-47. Basin won its ninth game of the 2011-12 campaign against 10 losses behind hot outside shooting and strong rebounding.

The Cougars blistered the nets for 10 3-point baskets as Jake Cooper and Bryce Nicholson each had 3 treys and Jake Dilbeck 2. Cooper had 15 points while Nicholson had 13 and Dilbeck who had a double double with11 points and 12 assists. Basin was led in scoring by Matt Ray who had a double double with a game-high 21 points and 10 rebounds. Dylan Boggs controlled the boards sweeping them for 20 rebounds.

Andrew Bradford had 11 points to lead Hiwassee Dam while Alex Rogers scored 10. I

In the girls contest, the Lady Cougars saw their record drop to 8-10 losses as they dropped a see-saw affair 44-38. Brianna Hyatt led the Lady Cougars with 14 points, while Skylah Mealer and Caitlyn Hyatt had 8 points each. Kendall Haney led the Lady Eagles with 14 points. Morgan Helton and Alex Lovingood had 7 each for Hiwassee Dam.

The Cougars jumped out to a 20-9 lead by the end of the first quarter and never looked back. By the end of the first half Basin had expanded its lead to 42-21. The third quarter was the closest the Eagles could come to playing the Cougars on equal terms but Basin still outscored the hosts 16-12 and extended their lead to 58-33. Reserves played much of the fourth quarter but the Cougars were still able to extend their lead by 8 more points.

The Lady Cougars had strong 2nd and 3rd quarters but were doomed by a slow start in the first quarter and a weak ending in the fourth. Basin’s girls ended the first quarter in a 7-3 hole but quickly rallied in the second quarter by outscoring the Lady Eagles 13-5 to take a 16-12 lead by halftime. The Lady Cougars were strong in the third quarter and were able to hold the lead at 29-27 at the end of that quarter, but the Lady Eagles come on strong in the fourth quarter, outscoring Basin 17-9 to win going away.
