Brasstown Concert Assoc. to celebrate
Musical notes of every kind will be heard during the gala season announced for Brasstown Concert Association (BCA)'s 35th year in western North Carolina. Frederick Moyer, world-renowned pianist and one of BCA's favored performers will open the season September 28th, 2:30 pm on stage at the Keith House, John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown, NC.
Since its founding in 1973 by Brasstown residents George and Rosemarie Kelischek, Lynn Gault and Dr. James Carley, this concert association has offered top-caliber music to audience members in North Carolina, Georgia and Tennessee, who appreciate not having to drive to Atlanta or Chattanooga in order to enjoy performances of both established musicians and outstanding young talent. "I never thought there would be a concert series of this caliber here!" wrote one person on a patron survey. A newcomer to the area wrote: "I picked up the BCA brochure at the Chamber of Commerce and thought "Yes, I can live here – there's good music available!" Also, as part of its outreach to the local community, BCA offers free tickets to students, grades 6-12, whose teachers would like to have them attend.
The officers chosen to oversee this anniversary year are Karen Borchers of Murphy, re-elected as President; Bob Grove of Brasstown elected as Vice President; Loye Merwin of Hayesville elected as Secretary; and Don Best, also of Brasstown, elected as Treasurer. Assisting the officers are board members Betty Best, Benetta Cook, David Cook, George Heilner, Rosemarie Kelischek, Pat Meinecke, Natalie Moses, Judy Taylor and Mike Thompson.
Remaining concerts in this anniversary season are: Muses' Delight, a baroque string ensemble, October 19, 2008; the Atlanta Brassworks quintet November 2, 2008; Irish whistle player Cormac Breatnach, January 4, 2009; Latin trio Sol Y Canto February 8, 2009; and Emory University's Vega String Quartet on March 8, 2009. Concerts are supported in part by The North Carolina Arts Council, an agency funded by the State of North Carolina and the National Endowment for the Arts. "We've appreciated the support we've received from the North Carolina Arts Council over the years. The Council has praised us for bringing artists of national repute and topnotch programs to our mountain communities", says Karen Borchers, BCA President. All concerts begin at 2:30pm in the Keith House at John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown, NC. Full and half-season tickets are available in advance.
